Research from Japan’s University of Tsukuba shows that even jogging at walking pace activates brain regions linked to focus and well-being.

A new study from the University of Tsukuba, published on August 4, 2026, in the journal Imaging Neuroscience, delivers welcome news for anyone who struggles to get motivated to exercise: just 10 minutes of very slow running — roughly at walking pace — are enough to improve mood and cognitive function.

Why Study Running, Not Just Cycling

Most of the evidence on exercise and brain function comes from cycling, since it’s easier to control intensity in a lab setting and, being low-impact, tends to be gentler on the joints.

Running, though, is a fundamental human movement, which led researchers to investigate whether it might offer similar benefits — and what the minimum effective dose might be.

What the Researchers Tested

The researchers recruited 24 healthy young adults and had each one complete two sessions: one of very slow treadmill running, at just 35% of their peak cardiorespiratory capacity, and another involving seated rest.

Speeds ranged between 3 and 6 km/h (about 2 to 3.7 mph) — below what’s typically considered “real running” (the transition from walking to running tends to occur around 7 km/h, or roughly 4.3 mph) — although participants maintained a running posture with short strides.

Before and after each session, participants completed a mood assessment and a classic cognitive task (the Stroop test), while sensors tracked brain activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).

Why That Matters for the Brain

After the slow run, participants performed better on the cognitive test, responding faster on tasks that required concentration and impulse control.

The sensors recorded greater activation in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex — a region associated with inhibitory control and mood regulation. In other words, even at a minimal pace, running appears to “switch on” the part of the brain responsible for maintaining focus and managing emotions.

The Curious Detail: The Head “Bounce”

One of the study’s most interesting findings involves a simple physical detail: the vertical movement of the head with each stride, which the researchers call “head acceleration.”

The greater the head movement, the greater the pleasure participants reported after the exercise. This same type of movement has previously been studied in rats running on treadmills and linked to a brain “self-cleaning” process known as the glymphatic system.

When this process isn’t working properly, harmful proteins can build up in the brain, triggering inflammation and disrupting communication between neurons.

Interestingly, this correlation with pleasure didn’t appear with any other variable measured — neither brain activation nor cognitive improvement. This suggests that head movement may be a distinct mechanism through which running promotes well-being.

Why Running May Beat Cycling on the Pleasure Front

Earlier research from the same team found that light-intensity cycling boosts alertness, but has a much smaller effect on pleasure. Slow running, by contrast, improved both alertness and pleasure — with a greater effect specifically on pleasure.

Follow-up tests confirmed that the head barely moves during cycling, even at a high cadence. That reinforces the theory that this up-and-down movement characteristic of running may be one of the key ingredients behind the difference.

This Isn’t the First Time “10 Minutes” Has Come Up as a Magic Number

A 2021 study, also from the University of Tsukuba, had already identified that same 10-minute window as ideal for stimulating brain function — but with participants running at a moderately intense pace.

That makes the new finding all the more striking: you don’t need to work up much of a sweat to reap the benefits.

A Pace Almost Anyone Can Manage

Since the positive effect shows up even at very low speeds, the finding could be especially relevant for sedentary people, beginners, or those with physical limitations who often avoid running because they assume it requires an intense pace to pay off.

More Isn’t Always Better

There’s a warning worth noting at the opposite end of the spectrum: overdoing exercise comes with its own costs. Studies on ultramarathons show that extreme exertion can cause the brain to breach its own protective barrier — rather than protecting it, the brain can start to break itself down.

What Still Needs to Be Confirmed

The study is small — just 24 participants, all young and healthy — and the researchers themselves acknowledge the need for further research, including across other age groups, to confirm whether the effect holds up over the long term.

Even so, the finding builds on earlier evidence: a 2018 study led by Suwabe and Soya, published in the journal PNAS, had already shown that 10 minutes of very light activity — such as yoga or walking — can improve hippocampus-dependent memory.

Taken together, it all points to the same idea: even minimal doses of movement seem to deliver real benefits for the mind — without needing to break a sweat.
