An Unbeaten Champion
In less than four months, Justify made history as the only Triple Crown champion to end his career undefeated. The colt won in 2018 the most coveted title in horse racing: the American Triple Crown, which includes the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes.
This achievement cemented him not only as a sports icon but also as the most valuable horse in the world, with breeding rights estimated at $75 million.
The Most Expensive Horse in the World
Initially purchased for $500,000 at a Keeneland auction in 2016, Justify’s value skyrocketed after his historic victories. His breeding rights were first negotiated for $60 million, with a clause adding $15 million if he won the Triple Crown. After achieving this milestone, the renowned Coolmore Stud acquired the horse for $75 million, surpassing the previous record held by the Japanese horse Fusaichi Pegasus, sold for $70 million in 2000.
The deal was strategic: it is estimated that Justify could cover up to 250 mares in his first year, at an average of $150,000 per foal, allowing the investment to pay off in about two years and highlighting his significance in the breeding market.
A Meteoric Career
Born on March 28, 2015, Justify debuted late: his first race took place on February 18, 2018. However, this delayed start did not hinder his rise. In just 111 days, he won all six of his races, including the three legs of the Triple Crown.
Justify became only the 13th horse in history to win the Triple Crown, but went further: he is the only one to finish his career undefeated and the first champion never to race at two years old.
The Reason for Early Retirement
Despite still having the potential to win titles like the Breeders’ Cup, Justify was retired from racing in July 2018. The reason was an injury to his left front ankle, which showed swelling and did not respond well to treatment. According to his trainer, Bob Baffert, the colt did not have enough time to recover and compete in peak condition for the fall season.
With only six races on his record, no other Triple Crown champion had such a short career—not even American Pharoah, also trained by Baffert, who ran 11 races and won nine.
Economic factors also played a role: Justify was already worth more as a stallion than he could earn racing. Putting a horse of his caliber at risk would have been imprudent, especially after the record valuation of his breeding rights.
The Coolmore Stud Empire
Coolmore Stud, located in Ireland, is considered the largest and most influential Thoroughbred breeding operation in the world. The consortium is led by John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, three of the most influential names in international racing, and also includes strategic partnerships with investors from the Chinese consortium China Horse Club, an NFL executive, a Kentucky rider, and others.

In the global Thoroughbred breeding industry, the lineage of a Triple Crown champion is considered one of the most valuable assets. Beyond the speed and stamina demonstrated on the track, the potential to produce competitive offspring further elevates a horse’s value.
