How a plan created by Bart Simpson during a cruise ship vacation became an internet conspiracy theory.
An episode from the 23rd season of The Simpsons, originally aired in 2012, has gone viral again on social media after users claimed the animated series had predicted a supposed hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship.
The shared scene comes from episode 19 of the season, titled “A Totally Fun Thing That Bart Will Never Do Again.” In the story, the Simpson family boards a cruise ship that initially seems disappointing to Bart. As the days go by, however, he begins enjoying the experience intensely and no longer wants to return home anytime soon.
Trying to extend the vacation at any cost, Bart puts a plan into action to scare passengers and crew members. To convince everyone to remain at sea, he broadcasts a fake emergency announcement across the ship’s screens using footage from a fictional movie.
The “Pandora Virus” Scene That Went Viral Again
In the recording shown by Bart, General William Sullivan warns about a supposed “deadly Pandora virus pandemic” that is allegedly spreading rapidly across the planet. The announcement also mentions an alleged “worldwide quarantine,” spreading fear and confusion among the cruise ship passengers.
From that moment on, passengers begin believing that disembarking would be extremely dangerous and agree to continue sailing indefinitely. Later, everyone discovers the warning was merely part of Bart’s scheme to prevent the vacation from ending and avoid returning to normal life in Springfield.
Despite the viral theory, the episode never mentions hantavirus nor makes any direct reference to a real-life case involving the disease.
The debate surrounding the episode perfectly reflects the division of opinions across social media.
On one side, a user defending the theory that the animated series once again “predicted the future” wrote on X:

Another widely shared comment on Reddit mocked the show’s alleged “prophetic abilities”:
“Watch me hit the bullseye… throws a billion darts.”
In addition, European fact-checking organizations and media outlets also pushed back against the conspiracy narrative. Spanish broadcaster RTVE described the story as a “false prediction” linked to conspiracy theories circulating online.
