With Smart Cashtags and the upcoming X Money, the platform moves forward in becoming a financial super app inspired by the WeChat model.

X, the social network owned by Elon Musk, is no longer just a place to read news and opinions. In a few weeks, the platform will launch a tool that will allow users to buy and sell stocks and cryptocurrencies without leaving the app.
The change is part of Musk’s plan to turn X into an “everything app,” similar to WeChat, where users can manage their social and financial lives without switching applications.
Smart Cashtags: Trading Without Leaving the Timeline
The new feature will be called Smart Cashtags (clickable tags that use the $ symbol followed by a financial asset’s ticker — e.g., $BTC, $AAPL).
The confirmation came from Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, who announced that the functionality will be launched in the coming weeks.
According to Bier:
“We are launching a series of features in a few weeks, including Smart Cashtags, which will allow trading stocks and cryptocurrencies directly from the timeline.”
With this, users will be able to:
- Interact with stock symbols in posts
- Buy and sell assets directly within the app
- React to market news in real time
The proposal is simple: reduce the distance between information and financial action.
Elon Musk’s History with Bitcoin
Musk’s companies already have significant exposure to the crypto market:
- Tesla holds 11,509 bitcoins on its balance sheet (down from the 42,300 initially acquired in 2021).
- SpaceX controls approximately 8,285 BTC.
This history reinforces the entrepreneur’s strategic proximity to the digital asset sector.
Integration Between Social Media and the Financial Market
A large portion of news that impacts the financial market first emerges on X. Investors, analysts, founders, and traders discuss asset movements in real time on the platform.
By incorporating trading tools into this environment, X:
- Accelerates the cycle between news and investment
- Keeps users within the app
- Expands its presence in the financial services sector
It is still unclear whether the company will partner with established brokerages, develop its own infrastructure, or adopt a hybrid model.
X Money: Proprietary Payment System in Beta Phase
The launch of Smart Cashtags will come first, followed by X Money, the platform’s peer-to-peer payment system. Musk confirmed that the tool is already in beta (internal testing) and is expected to reach a selected group of users between March and April 2026.
The proposal is to allow users to:
- Send money
- Receive payments
- Make investments
- Publish and interact socially
Elon Musk’s Vision: The Western “Super App”
Since acquiring the company, Elon Musk has reinforced the goal of transforming X into a complete ecosystem, similar to WeChat in China — an app that integrates messaging, payments, and various services.
Musk has already stated that the platform was designed to be:
“The central hub of all monetary transactions.”
Currently, X has approximately 600 million monthly users, creating a significant base for expanding financial services.
