In recent years, humanoid robots have moved beyond being just a science fiction dream to occupy space in laboratories, factories, and even daily life. In viral videos online, it is common to see these machines performing sports activities, dancing, or even failing comically. But behind the flips and stumbles, there is a rapidly expanding market, combining big promises, potential risks, and a fierce race between China and the United States for technological leadership.

From Marketing to Practice: The R1 Example

A notable case is the R1, a humanoid robot launched by Unitree Robotics in Hangzhou, China. With 26 joints and weighing less than 25 kg, it impresses with mobility and versatility in physical activities. The most striking detail, however, is the price: around $5,900 (42,340 yuan), far below other market models. For comparison, Unitree itself sells the H1, its most advanced model, for approximately $90,000.

The R1 is aimed at small developers and research teams who would not have access to high-cost robots. However, the low price raises questions: to what extent do quality and reliability match the affordable cost? Videos circulating online show robots resembling the R1 failing in public, sometimes displaying uncontrolled behavior amid crowds — which, even if classified as software glitches, raises safety concerns.

Robots in Daily Life: Promises and Limitations

Despite bold marketing, specialists recognize that humanoid robots are still far from full integration into daily life. At events like the World Robotics Conference in Beijing, machines were seen serving popcorn, boxing, playing chess or soccer. While entertaining, these feats reveal more about design and mobility than about real advances in intelligence.

The main challenge lies in perception and environmental response capabilities. As explained by Jay Huang, director of the Asia industrial technologies sector at Bernstein, it will still take decades for humanoids to perform 80% of human physical tasks. Today, practical applications are focused on repetitive factory functions, such as sorting materials and checking quality, or more superficial roles, like greeting visitors in shopping centers.

The Battleground: China vs. United States

While technology is still in its infancy, the race between China and the U.S. is increasingly intense. China’s strategy is clear: launch products quickly, multiply use cases, and lower prices. Americans tend to seek the so-called “perfect solution”, investing in more sophisticated, albeit expensive models.

An example on the American side is Tesla’s Optimus, which Elon Musk intends to produce at scale, with a goal of 5,000 units this year. Meanwhile, Chinese companies such as Unitree, UBTech, and Engine AI release models priced between 38,500 and 100,000 yuan, making them much more accessible.

According to analysts like Arthur Kroeber of Gavekal Dragonomics, China is already advancing in integrating AI and industrial robotics, which could result in efficiency gains within two to four years. Some Chinese factories, like BYD, Geely, and Foxconn, are already testing humanoids in production processes, even if they operate at only 20% of human efficiency.

The Dangers of an Evolving Technology

Safety is among the most debated issues. If a low-cost robot fails in a controlled environment, the impact may be just a funny stumble. But in factories or public spaces, the consequences could be serious. Software failures, sensor errors, or AI system overloads could lead to accidents, highlighting the need for regulation and strict usage protocols.

Another sensitive point is tariffs and trade disputes. In the U.S., companies like Apptronik face challenges competing with Chinese prices, especially since many components come from China. This may slow the American market while Beijing advances rapidly.

The Future: Projections and Possibilities

Despite current limitations, the robotics industry envisions a future where humanoids are common in domestic environments, assisting with tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and elder care. Today, however, simple attempts, like making a bed, still have low success rates.

Experts believe that the next decade will be decisive in determining which countries and companies will dominate this market. China bets on volume and affordability; the U.S., on sophistication and efficiency. In both cases, the widespread presence of humanoids still seems distant, but the first steps are already underway.

Between Fascination and Caution

Humanoid robots carry both the fascination of innovation and the caution of the unknown. From a commercial perspective, buying a robot for under $6,000 can be a unique opportunity for developers and laboratories. But, as the saying goes, “you get what you pay for”.

Thus, while marketing screens show flips and synchronized dances, engineers and investors know that the journey to integrate humanoids into everyday life is still long — and full of challenges.
