What do electricians and welders have to do with artificial intelligence?
Although AI is often associated with advanced chips and sophisticated software, its operation depends on an enormous physical infrastructure. Big Tech companies are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in data centers.
Building and maintaining these massive facilities requires advanced networking systems, robust electrical infrastructure, and complex cooling systems to prevent servers from overheating. Without the physical workforce, the algorithms simply cannot run.
The labor shortage could slow the expansion of AI
The bottleneck is not affecting Google alone. Anthropic, Meta, and OpenAI are also racing to address the shortage of skilled workers in the U.S. labor market:

According to projections cited by Google, approximately 2.1 million positions in skilled technical trades could remain unfilled by 2030. The most critical occupations include:

- HVAC specialists (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning);
- Industrial workers and construction laborers.
How Google’s funding will be used
The funds will be distributed through Google.org to 14 labor unions and four trade associations, supporting training programs across more than 20 U.S. states.
Participants will receive support to obtain the certifications and qualifications required to fill open positions. In addition to expanding training capacity, part of the funding will be used to modernize learning programs by incorporating artificial intelligence tools into technical education.
