SpaceX fast-tracks the Starmind project: satellites with Nvidia chips and a massive AI infrastructure in orbit

Elon Musk wants to move part of the world’s AI data centers into space. SpaceX is fast-tracking its Starmind project, which calls for launching satellites equipped with next-generation Nvidia chips to build a massive orbital computing infrastructure starting in late 2027.
In recent days, the company confirmed concrete details about the initiative. Musk indicated that the first AI satellites should launch in the fourth quarter of 2027, with significant scale-up expected as early as 2028.
The idea is bold: instead of building massive terrestrial complexes that consume absurd amounts of energy and water, the plan is to put part of that processing power directly into space.
“Satellites That Think“
The Starmind satellites will operate as orbital data centers, packing serious computing power directly into space. Powered by large solar panels, they’ll use laser communication and heat radiators to process artificial intelligence workloads right in orbit, cutting down on dependence on ground-based infrastructure.
The first generation will run on a space-hardened version of the Vera Rubin NVL72 architecture, from Nvidia — the company’s flagship platform, built to power the next generation of high-performance AI data centers. According to Musk, the space-based design is simpler, denser, lighter, and cheaper than a traditional server rack.
An Ambition of 1 Million Satellites
The long-term vision is staggering. SpaceX has already sought authorization for a constellation that could grow to as many as 1 million computing satellites. While that figure is extremely ambitious — and still a long way off — the company aims to be operating at meaningful scale as early as 2028.
To back up that plan, SpaceX has announced an investment of roughly $100 billion to build a new spaceport in Louisiana. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first launches planned for 2029. The goal is to dramatically boost Starship’s capacity to place dozens of satellites into orbit per launch.
The Challenges Are Real
Despite the progress, a report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) flags considerable technical and economic hurdles to putting data centers in orbit. Among them: cooling in a vacuum, radiation shielding, high manufacturing and launch costs, and the risks tied to massive satellite constellations.
The agency and industry analysts also warn that a rapid buildup of these constellations could worsen congestion in low Earth orbit, raising the risk of collisions and the accumulation of space debris.
Even so, Starmind is no longer just a futuristic concept. It now has a timeline, a satellite architecture, a partnership with Nvidia, and an industrial plan behind it. If SpaceX manages to turn that vision into reality, it could rewrite the rules of the game — not just for artificial intelligence, but for the planet’s entire digital infrastructure.
