The memorandum from the future that predicts the “Cycle of Perdition”: what happens to the economy when intelligence stops being a scarce resource?

The Citrini Report — officially titled “The 2028 Global Intelligence Crisis” — is a macroeconomic analysis document published by Citrini Research in February 2026. The text went viral for being written as a memorandum from June 2028, retrospectively explaining how Artificial Intelligence would have caused an economic collapse.
Its authors are James Van Geelen (known as “Citrini”), a macroeconomic analyst noted for accurate forecasts, and Alap Shah, a technology-focused investor.
The Central Thesis: The “Cycle of Perdition”
The report argues that the abundance of intelligence destroys economic value. In the proposed scenario, companies replace workers with AI agents to increase margins, reinvesting profits into even more automation. The structural problem is that machines do not consume, do not finance homes (threatening the $13 trillion real estate sector), and do not drive the real economy, creating a cycle in which:
- Layoffs increase profits;
- Profits fund more AI;
- Human income and consumption shrink;
- The economy slows down.
By 2028, the projection is 10.2% unemployment in the U.S. and a 38% drop in the S&P 500.
“Ghost GDP” and the Death of SaaS
The document introduces “Ghost GDP”: productivity and nominal GDP rise due to machines, but wealth does not circulate socially. It also predicts the end of intermediaries:
- Software: AI agents would make subscription-based systems like Salesforce or SAP obsolete.
- Platforms: Apps like Uber would lose relevance to zero-cost agents.
- Financial Sector: Visa and Mastercard would be pressured by direct payments via stablecoins on networks such as Solana and Ethereum.
Real Impact and Criticism
On February 23, 2026, its release caused market volatility and declines in companies such as IBM. Although the Federal Reserve classifies the text as a “left-tail” event (rare but catastrophic), critics argue that it ignores future regulations and the creation of new types of jobs.
The Citrini Report is not a prophecy, but a warning about the risk of intelligence ceasing to be a scarce resource before society is prepared.
