A humanoid robot took a spectacular tumble during a training sprint for the World Humanoid Robot Games, nicknamed the “Robot Olympics,” which take place in Beijing from August 22 to 26.

The robot took off down the track at full speed, but couldn’t brake in time and slammed into a padded barrier. The impact was so violent that the humanoid’s body folded sharply at the waist as sparks flew from the machine — and a video of the crash has already racked up more than 20 million views on X.

The Fall That Became a Meme

The video spread fast, with users online comparing the scene to a cartoon. “Zero to sparks in 15 seconds. Absolutely gorgeous,” one user wrote. Another joked: “Twenty thousand yuan gone in a flash.” A third quipped that it was the “first robot to end its career early due to a spinal injury.”

Not the First Time

This wasn’t an isolated incident. Earlier footage had already shown other robots veering off the track and losing their balance before crashing into walls — which is why organizers installed the padded barriers in the first place. This time, though, even the padding wasn’t enough to prevent the damage.

The Robot That Reportedly Beat Usain Bolt’s Top Speed

All eyes this year are on “Superman,” the humanoid built by manufacturer Unitree, which the company says hit 41.5 feet per second in testing — a speed faster than the estimated top speed of 40.7 feet per second Usain Bolt reached during his 100-meter world record run. Unitree also claims the robot can jump nearly 6.6 feet.

That top speed, however, is a figure released by Unitree itself and hasn’t been independently verified.

But even “Superman” wasn’t immune to mishaps: on August 17, the robot veered off the track and crashed into an electrical box during another test run.

Why the Robots Can’t Seem to Stop

For Eren Chen, an AI specialist who shared the videos, the problem runs deeper than any single robot: “I think China’s robotics industry might be over-optimizing for speed right now.”

According to him, once a robot has already proven it can run, squeezing out even more speed brings diminishing returns. “Knowing when to slow down, when to stop, and how to stop safely is just as important as how fast you can run,” Chen wrote.

A Massive Competition — And a Tougher One This Year

The 2026 edition brings together 2,056 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries, competing in 51 events spanning sports and real-world tasks. A new rule adds an extra layer of difficulty: only fully autonomous robots — no remote control allowed — are eligible for certain events.

Unitree has stood out since the very first edition. In 2025, the company took home four gold medals — in the 400-meter dash, 1,500 meters, 100-meter hurdles, and the 4×100-meter relay.
