Microsoft has released a groundbreaking study detailing which jobs are most and least likely to be impacted by generative artificial intelligence. Titled Working with AI: Measuring the Occupational Implications of Generative AI, the report analyzed the real impact of AI across more than a thousand occupations, offering a clear picture of where technology is already transforming work and where it still faces barriers.

Study Methodology

The research was based on more than 200,000 real interactions between users and Copilot, Microsoft’s tool that incorporates generative AI for tasks such as writing, spreadsheet creation, presentations, and data analysis. These records were cross-referenced with information from O*NET, the U.S. Department of Labor’s occupational database.

Using this data, the researchers created the “AI applicability index”, which measures how much the typical tasks of each occupation can be assisted, accelerated, or replaced by AI. It is important to note that higher applicability does not necessarily mean job loss; in many cases, the technology acts as support, increasing productivity.

In fact, they compare the situation to ATMs: although machines automated a core part of the bank teller’s role, teller jobs actually increased, because technology reduced costs and allowed humans to focus on customer relationships.
